VWR Cold-Air Intake System 2.0 / 1.4 TSI and 2.0 TDI

One of our most popular products is the VWR Cold-Air Intake System kit, enabling cold, dense air from outside the engine bay to reach the fuel metering unit more efficiently for the 2.0 and 1.4 'TSI' turbo engines and the 2.0 TDI in Golf 5/6 and other A5-platform models.

Our High-Flow TriFoam™ triple-layer construction is simply the best filtration material on the market, and is the key to the power gains achieved.  Each filter is handmade in the UK.  Some people forget that it’s what’s inside an intake system that really matters.

Developed for use in our Volkswagen Racing cars, the system delivers really impressive airflow gains. By reducing turbo spool by up to up to 500rpm in some cases through the enhanced efficiency of the system, lightning fast turbo response is guaranteed.

KEY TECH SPECS

TRIFOAM™ FILTER

Trifoam® filter construction, triple-layer laminate of open-cell polyurethane foam, which gives an exceptionally high level of filtration – the very same technology as Formula One engines use.

SIMPLE FITTING

All parts have been developed exclusively for 2.0 TSI, 1.4 TSI and 2.0 TDI engines - meaning that fitting is straightforward, and the original mounting points are retained.

POWER GAINS

Efficient filtration and huge filter surface area means power and torque gains support higher power remaps, and an economy improvement.

EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY

Hand-built in the UK, using the highest quality materials and construction.

EASY CLEANING

Cleaning is only required every 20,000 miles (30,000km) in normal usage.

SOUND QUALITY

You'll hear the rich induction noise from this race-bred intake as soon as you accelerate hard. However, as a fully-enclosed intake, volume levels are well-contained.

PERFORMANCE /// DEVELOPMENT

performance

///
Through keeping intake temperatures as low as possibly, and greatly improving airflow into the engine, more power is produced, turbo lag is reduced and better fuel efficiency is achieved.

///  Turbocharger spool can drop nearly 500 RPMs, reducing turbo lag and creating faster turbo response.

///  Our development has shown that a high-flow intake system on the 2.0 TSI engine really gives worthwhile gains on uprated cars – so this intake is best combined with a remap.

///  Our testing on the VWR Cold Air Intake has given gains of around 5% more effective peak power compared with the standard factory air box.  Testing on cars running higher power show further increased power/torque improvements from the Intake system, as the standard air box and filter reaches and exceeds its airflow limit.

///  As a race-bred intake system, the rich induction noise is clear as soon as you first accelerate hard.  However volume levels are well-contained, and the sound quality is music to the ears of any enthusiastic driver!

DEVELOPMENT

///  The intake uses a fully-enclosed gloss black-anodised aluminium spinning which contains the high flow triple-layer cone filter.

///  The VWR Cold Air Intake integrates seamlessly with the factory management system to provide the perfect basis for modifying the car.

///  Stainless steel or plated screws, nuts and washers are used throughout the kit to enhance both appearance and durability – and of course to enhance the engine bay appearance.

///  Our TriFoam™ triple-layer laminate of open-cell polyurethane foam gives an exceptionally high level of filtration to protect the engine from contaminants in the air down to well below 5 microns, giving the highest level of filtration to protect your engine

///  All our filters are hand-built in the UK from the highest quality materials available.

///  The end result of our development is the exact Cold-Air Intake System that we use in our race cars, which also makes for one of the most popular and effective modifications for a road car.

Maintenance and cleaning

///  We recommend that the Filter element is cleaned every 20,000 miles/30,000 km. This is a simple procedure, and will ensure that your Filter continues to deliver the power improvements over a standard car.

///  Our Trifoam material is the most advanced foam construction available.  If you do not clean your Filter at the above intervals, Trifoam means that no loss of filtration will occur, and your engine will still be fully protected. However, the performance advantages of additional air􀈖ow of a clean Filter will be lost.

///  If your car is regularly used in a dusty environment, we advise that you clean and re-oil your Filter more regularly.

STEP 1: FILTER cleaning

/// Use Racingline foam air filter cleaner. (Use ITG CL-1 cleaner if Racingline cleaner is unavailable).

/// Racingline cleaning fluid is intended to be used in a two-part cleaning process where the cleaner breaks
down the sticky dust retention oil on the filter which is then washed off using warm water.

/// Spray the cleaner liberally onto the filter and thoroughly massage in. You need to ensure the cleaner has worked its way through all the layers in the foam and it may be necessary to apply extra cleaner until you are satisfied the cleaning fluid has fully penetrated the foam. To help the cleaner to break down the oil, it is advisable to leave the filter for 2-3 minutes and then further massage the cleaner into the foam.

/// The next step is to wash the filter out in warm water. Thoroughly wash the filter until you are totally sure that
all the cleaning fluid has been removed and the water running through the filter looks clear. It is also advisable to run water through from the clean side outwards to further help the removal of any dust still held within the
filter. This stage of the process should take no more than 4–5 minutes, leaving the filter submerged in water for a prolonged period of time may cause the glues in the filter to soften and eventually break down.

/// Next follow the same process again using washing up liquid, this will help to break down any remaining cleaner still left in the filter. Apply a small amount of washing up liquid onto the filter and massage into the foam working it all the way through. Rinse the filter in cold water until none of the soap suds remain and the water runs
clear, shake the filter to remove excess water.

/// Now the filter is clean you will need to leave it in a warm, dry place until is fully dried out for a minimum
period of 24 hours. Do not use a high pressure air line or heat gun to speed the process up.

STEP 2:  RE-OILING AFTER CLEANING

///  Never use an unoiled or dry foam filter in your vehicle as this will significantly reduce the efficiency and may allow small dust particles to pass through without being trapped by the dust retention oil.

///  Once you have completed Stage 1, cleaning your filter, and ensured it is completely dry, you are ready to perform the important stage of re-oiling it. You will need to purchase a suitable aerosol Air Filter Oil.

It is very important that this is a specific Air Filter Oil, and no sort of other product. We recommend RacingLine, Castrol, ITG or Shell branded aerosol Air Filter Oil. Read instructions and safety warnings on the product before use. Follow the instructions provided on your cleaning product; in general, the procedure is as follows:

Use in an open environment. Holding the aerosol about 25mm or 1 “ from the filter, spray in a circular motion all over the foam surface until the coarse foam pores just start to fill up with oil. Then wearing protective gloves use your finger tips to ‘massage’ the oil into the depth of the foam whilst it still feels cold to the touch. The aerosol contains a mix of oil concentrate and thinners which assist the oil to penetrate into the foam. The thinners will evaporate o􀈔 after around 5-10 minutes, so massage the oil into the foam as soon as it is applied, to assist the oil in penetrating through to the fine inner layer of foam. Your filter is now ready to re-install.
